At least in the newsfeed available at washingtonpost.com, which generated this story by Jennifer Kerr. The search engine, I'm afraid, is unreliable (which makes it tricky for me to check for continued lack of Air America funding scandal coverage, but I digress). There may be other files by AP that tell us more. But it does show that as of Thursday, Kerr was as mystified by ANSWER as the Post. Kerr:
Still, Brian Becker, national coordinator for ANSWER (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism), says people have not forgotten about the war.
"People are very angry at the Bush administration," Becker said....
Becker being, at the very least, a Workers World Party alum, as I noted here. WWP is the home of those nice Stalinist people. Where right now you can read that Iraqi resistance earns world's respect, and where Iran, Syria, and North Korea are the good guys.
Later in the AP story:
ANSWER and United for Peace and Justice are the main anti-war organizers.
Another interesting item from the AP story:
The anti-war groups began an advertising campaign Thursday, sponsored by the Win Without War coalition, with an advertisement in The Washington Post and other newspapers. The left side of the double-page ad pictures Bush and administration officials with quotes about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq under the headline "They lied." The right side lists the names of American military personnel killed in Iraq with the headline "They died."
A television spot, sponsored by Gold Star Families for Peace, is running on Fox News Channel and local cable TV. The TV ad features Cindy Sheehan and other relatives of soldiers killed in Iraq.
I've seen the ad run on Fox News today--and it doesn't feature Sheehan, but other women who've lost family in Iraq. I wonder if Sheehan's wild ravings about American fascism have penetrated American consciousness enough to make her a less valuable tool.
