At the end of his online column today, Howard Kurtz quotes from Cindy Sheehan's Huffingpost blog on why she looked so cheery when she was getting arrested in the tradition of Gandhi and Martin Luther King:
I took a swipe at Cindy Sheehan yesterday for mugging for the cameras during her arrest. Here's what she has to say:
"I had a huge grin on my face when I was getting arrested yesterday. I have received a lot of flak for smiling. Apparently I am not supposed to smile, but I had some really good reasons for doing so.
"First of all, I was having fun. I was with a group of good-humored, cheerful, happy people. We were singing old protest songs and old Sunday school songs and clapping. I felt I had to be cheerful to set the tone. We didn't want any trouble or to do anything non-peaceful. Secondly, when I got arrested and the officers lifted me out I was afraid that America would see my underwear and that tickled me...
"I don't think I can be challenged for my analysis of the war and for what I say because it is all the truth and comes from my heart, so I have to be attacked for smiling. I won't apologize for smiling, though, we are making a difference and that is definitely something to smile about!"
It's fine for Kurtz to balance his criticism of Sheehan with her own defense, but to this day the Washington Post hasn't printed Sheehan's outrageous statements against Bush, his supporters, and the neocon cabal. I can't say whether Kurtz has never featured them online, though I suspect not. So here is a brief and incomplete review of Sheehan's analysis of the war:
President Bush is an "evil maniac" who should "sign up his two little party-animal girls" for combat.
Bush is the "biggest terrorist," and is promoting the "cancer of Pax Americana" and "imperialism in the Middle East" with the help of other "war criminals" in the executive branch and Congress.
Sheehan also has observed that foreign insurgents are "freedom fighters" and last January the Iraqis held a "sham election."
The Post's most recent near occasion of reporting concerned Sheehan's appearance at the "antiwar" protest in Washington Saturday, where she said "We'll be the check and balance on this out of control criminal government."
Readers of the Post didn't learn about that comment, getting this instead:
"This is amazing!" Sheehan said. "You're part of history."
As for Sheehan, there's no challenging her analysis because it's all true and it comes from the heart. There is another human organ located between the ears that others find useful, but never mind.
