Ernie Pyle and the New York Times

From the Scripps-Howard Foundation website, notes on war correspondent Ernie Pyle:

Millions mourned when Ernie Was killed by Japanese machine-gun fire on the Pacific island of Ie Shima on April 18, 1945, while serving as a war correspondent with the 77th Infantry Division.

That kind of reaction is.... less likely today.

I don't want any reporters to die. Some of my best friends are reporters. But as noted over the weekend, the New York Times publishes the work of Joao Silva, a photographer who accompanied a Mahdi sniper as he tried to kill Americans. This should be followed by abject soul-searching, and probably won't.
