Post Beats News or in our neck of the woods, Post beats Post:
October 30, 2006 -- The New York Post today surpassed the Daily News and The Washington Post to become the 5th largest newspaper in America after bucking the national trend and chalking up a whopping 5.1 percent jump in circulation.
The Post's average paid circulation was 704,011 for Monday to Friday in the six-month period ending Sept. 30, the Audit Bureau of Circulations reported.
That's an increase of 34,348 copies over the same period in 2005.
Spruiell at NRO has a list of the top 25, with total circulation and the percentage rise or fall from the same period last year. Of those 25, only three newspapers increased their numbers: The New York Post (5.3%), the New York Daily News (1.0%), and the St. Louis Post Dispatch (0.6%). (I can't tell you why we have two different figures for the New York Post's increase, but 5-something-percent is pretty good).
The Washington Post fell 3.3%, which back-of-the-envelope puts it near the middle of the pack. High-fives for not being the Los Angeles Times (down 8.0%) or the Philadelphia Inquirer (down 7.5%). Or The New York Times, twice, since they fell 3.5% and paid a gazillion or so for the Boston Globe which is down 6.7%.

Baltimore Sun down 9%. Doesn't make the list because it doesn't even make the top 25!
